I think I'm going to change my hair - again.

I think I'm coming to a crossroads with my hair.

In the past, I've done just about everything to my hair.  As crunchy as I am otherwise, when it comes to my hair it's about as unnatural as it can get.  I've had it black, I've had it red, I've had it super light blonde, I've done closer to dark brown.  I've had it short, mid-length, long, and - most recently - with bangs.  But let's focus on the color here for a second!  After I had Little Man, my blonde hair slowly started turning darker and darker and darker.

Shortly after it began to turn so dark, I began to dye it.  I started with highlighting, but to get to the salon all the time was {who am I kidding - is} too much upkeep for me.  Especially since I don't even go to a salon to have them cut my hair!  So I started to dye my hair at home.  Overall, it's gone really well.  But lately, I've been having some trouble.  Since I've been dying my hair a very light blonde since probably the middle to end of the summer, it's finally starting to show some wear.  The past few times I've dyed it, my hair has come out with blueish gray colors and started to show much more breakage.

Not to mention how much of a pain it is to have to re-dye my roots every 6 weeks.

So, I'm done I think.  Because I don't want to have half a head of light blonde and half a head of dark blonde, I think I'm going to try to dye my hair darker at home first.  Getting back to a darker blonde or even maybe a light brunette is for sure my goal.  If I can't get it back to the color I'd like at home, I would definitely consider going back to a salon to ombre my hair in order to let it fade back up into the darker color.

It's going to be a huge change for me, since I've been so accustomed to being anything other than what I really look like for a while.  But it's a good change.  I don't know how I'll like it, if I'll keep it, or how that change will affect me.  But I know getting back to a little bit more of who I am on the underneath is always a good step.

  1. You might have to dye your hair a couple of times to get it back to where you want it. In the past I've almost destroyed my hair too. One time is was so blonde/ash/grey that when I first dyed it some brown colour, it literally went this disgusting dishwater green/brown colour.

I learnt that you should first use a semi-permanent dye with a reddish tone to it, then dye it which ever colour brown you want after.

    Google it, research it.

Although my girlfriend always went from blonde to dark without a single hitch.

  2. Be careful. If your hair is doing the blue/ashy thing it might mean that it doesn't have enough pigment in it from being dyed blonde before (your hair is dyed blonde by destroying its natural pigment). If that's the case the darker won't take and will probably end up looking green. A professional can do treatments to add pigment to your hair and get you where you need to be for home upkeep.
