Reader Q & A - How to make your own soap!

On my recent survey, one reader asked me a quick question -

When you wrote about making soapwhere do you BUY the ingredients?

The answer to this question is somewhat simple, but lends itself to the possible discovery of a crunchy clean product used by many but heard of by few:

make your own soap, DIY hand soap recipe

Castile Soap.

Castile soap is made by several companies, but my favorite is Dr. Bronner's.  Dr. Bronner's castile soap comes in two varieties - bar or liquid.  I use bar castile soap on the kids during bathtime, and love how clean and clean-smelling they are when they come out of the tub.  And the liquid soap?  That's what I use to make my own soap in dispensers.

More specifically - I put about an inch or less of castile soap into the bottom of an empty foam pump dispenser, fill the rest of the dispenser with water, screw the lid back on - and blam!  New soap dispenser, ready to go.

My favorite place to buy Castile soap is Trader Joe's - mainly because they often will have different scents and formulations, but you can typically buy Castile soap at some of your local groceries as well.  I just find that you have to search a bit harder at first and at times grab an employee to help you out.

Outside of making hand soap, a bottle of Castile soap {which seriously lasts me forever} can be used for a bunch of other jobs as well - like shampoo, body wash, detergent, all-purpose cleaner, floor cleaner, and even toothpaste if you're that crunchy!  If you've never checked out Castile soap in the past, it's definitely worth a try!

Have you used Castile soap in your home?

  1. Great idea! I have regular dispensers, do you need / prefer the foam dispensers? If so, do you know where you can buy the empty foam dispensers?

    1. I feel like it works so much better with the foam dispensers - I haven't had good luck with regular soap dispensers. I have been pretty lucky, however, with finding friends who donate their empty dispensers to me. I do find that the method foam soap dispensers work the best, and have purchased some of those just to use up for the foam dispenser when it's done :)

  2. So simple! Thanks for this - I've been trying to make more of my own cleaning products but it sometimes seems daunting. This is so easy.
