When I tell people that, the first question most people ask is, "What is Tot School?"
Well, it's pretty simple really! Tot school is early education for toddlers. These are the kids are are more than capable of learning, but usually don't have formal education until preschool. Tot school just jump starts the learning by teaching basics like colors, numbers, letters, and shapes while focusing on developing skills like matching, coloring, pouring, scooping, and other fine motor controls.
Unlike other formal education, tot school isn't lead by the teacher {you} but by the toddler! The goal with tot school is to give toddlers the control to learn at their own pace. Your role is to give your toddler interesting and engaging activities that teach the desired skills.
With my son Henry, I started tot school at 12 months. We started with colors then moved on to shapes. At 22 months old, I'm proud to say he knows all of his colors, shapes, some numbers and over half the alphabet. But the best part is, Henry loves tot school and it keeps him really entertained.
Tot school doesn't have to be complicated. We do three different "trays" per week. Each tray includes some new activity that helps to teach whatever skill we are working on. I do other activities throughout the week, depending on Henry's interest. But, you can start with just one activity a week! There is no required structure and no curriculum -- its all set by you and your toddler.
I don't know about you, but I'm always looking for a happy, entertained toddler -- especially this winter. For some reason, toddlers just seem to thrive on learning.
