The Clean Food Challenge- Day 1

So, I'll start at the beginning, with breakfast.

On a typical day, I would probably start out with a bowl of cereal and some rice milk.  But here's the thing about cereal.  It's freaking expensive.  And, to get the good kind, like Kashi or cereals that aren't all sugar, it's even more expensive.  And I think I can get some of the same nutrients from other foods, without having to eat 'fortified' cereal because I'm not getting enough of the right vitamins and minerals from my normal food.  So, instead of slurping up my cereal annoyingly while my darling husband looks on in disdain,

I am starting off today with something different.

I am starting off with something just as easy, just as quick, and with a few additions, just as good.  I'm starting with this oatmeal from Meijer.  Organic, only one ingredient (just rolled oats, that's it), and less expensive than the Quaker brand.  Oatmeal is really good for you in addition to being a crunchy mama friendly food (some people believe it helps your milk supply while nursing your little ones), just ask Mr. Breakfast and he'll tell you some other reasons why.

To my oatmeal this morning, I'm mixing it up a little bit, and adding in some pumpkin puree. I couldn't find this organic at Meijer, but again, no added anything in it.  Just pumpkin.  To the pumpkin and oatmeal mix, I added just a little bit of cinnamon (and a dash of honey if you have a sweet tooth), and there you go, breakfast amazingness with all real ingredients.  And it was still simple and easy and cheap!  Add in a banana or other piece of fruit and you are good to go with two servings of fruit and one of grains to get your day started.

As you start off your first day of the challenge, keep in mind that it doesn't have to be super involved, or raw, fresh foods.  It just actually has to be food.

So here are a few discussion questions to get you thinking here on Day 1, post your answers and how you are doing today in the comments below if you'd like.

Think about what food you eat most commonly.

Is there one food you always tend to come back to?

Why do you think you like to eat that food?

Also, check out our other participants in the blog challenge and see how they are doing!
